Como parte de un análisis sobre el tema que da título, basado en las polémicas imágenes de las campañas publicitarias de la PSP White y de Dolce & Gabana del año 2012 insertas a continuación, tengo que anticipar mi total desacuerdo con el uso del género y de cualquier otra condición del ser humano con los fines con que sistemáticamente se viene utilizando por parte de los creativos publicitarios.
Desconocía la existencia de las imágenes que nos ocupan. Soy observador de mi entorno pero no retengo especialmente la imaginería publicitaria, quizá por aversión intelectual a lo que significa, aunque, contradictoriamente, no deje de considerarme un consumidor normal y tan influenciable como cualquier otro.
Con todo ello, la primera visión de estas imágenes me resultó bastante indiferente, no me llamaron especialmente la atención, quizá me recordaron a tantas otras utilizadas con idénticas pretensiones con las que no he apreciado inicialmente diferencias destacables. Es a partir del análisis inducido por esta actividad cuando soy capaz de apreciar la carga de fondo que realmente parecen contener.
Efectivamente, son imágenes sexistas, eso parece difícilmente cuestionable en la medida en que utilizan factores diferenciadores de cada uno de los dos sexos como elemento fundamental de reclamo. Pero creo que esa sensación sólo trasciende el límite de lo inconscientemente perceptible hasta que se genera la polémica y toda la atención se concentra en aquello que inicialmente había pasado inadvertido. Si, en este caso y a juzgar por mi propia experiencia, el factor sexo capta el interés cuando ya ha sido denunciado y se convierte en objeto de polémica. Como suele suceder ante cualquier hecho, ante cualquier circunstancia, cualquier característica puede adquirir relevancia en función del ruido que, en muchas ocasiones por puro azar, es capaz de generar.
Decía al principio y reitero que soy radicalmente contrario al uso de ninguna condición del elemento humano como reclamo comercial, por eso, ya inducida en mí esa percepción sexista de estas imágenes, comparto la idea de su inadecuación a la finalidad con la que han sido creadas. Ninguna justificación, por tanto. Pero realmente creo que es la conducta gregaria y, ya que hablamos de comunicación, la respuesta social en sí, entendiendo la sociedad como una masa influenciable, la que genera una percepción colectiva más crítica con estas imágenes de lo que normalmente lo es con miles de otras imágenes del mismo formato y con el mismo sesgo, o incluso más radical, que a diario inundan nuestro entorno.
No soy capaz de discernir si esta publicidad estaba intencionalmente dirigida a hombres o a mujeres, en mi percepción podría estarlo indistintamente a ambos sexos, pero si sé que abundan en nuestro entorno cotidiano un sinfín de gadgets con una carga de contenido sexista mucho mayor y sensiblemente más explícito. No me gustan, intelectualmente, estas imágenes, pero probablemente cumplan su objetivo y sean capaces de condicionarme en la dirección que pretenden de la misma forma que aquellas que me resulten más atractivas.
Como última variante del análisis, abordemos el hecho de si la polémica generada con estas imágenes y su retirada del mercado podría proporcionar elementos de cambio a la situación de las mujeres. Inevitablemente, para llegar hasta ahí habrá que definir previamente cuál es esa situación de las mujeres a la que explícitamente se alude. En ausencia de más datos, en un ejercicio de improvisación voy a tratar de suponer dos hipótesis.
La primera, que esa situación podría querer referirse al plano de inferioridad en que, de forma genérica, determinadas teorías sociales sitúan a la mujer actual frente al hombre. Suponiendo que esto sea así, un hecho generalizado, opinión que comparto sólo relativamente, creo que la polémica suscitada y la posterior retirada de estas imágenes no tienen directamente ningún impacto en la conquista de espacios o de igualdad por parte de la mujer. Si, como he dicho antes, me resulta difícilmente identificable en las imágenes el género al que van de forma intencional dirigidas, no veo en su retirada ningún factor de refuerzo de la imagen de la mujer frente a la del hombre, nada más allá de una respuesta políticamente correcta a la polémica suscitada. Son ambiguas, es probable que intencionadamente ambiguas, y esto diluye el potencial efecto reforzante o debilitador que podrían tener para la imagen de cualquiera de los dos sexos.
La segunda hipótesis sería que esa situación que se plantea en el enunciado quiera referirse exclusivamente al uso habitual y mayoritario de la mujer como reclamo publicitario, derivándonos directamente al concepto de la mujer objeto. Aquí sí estaríamos en otro escenario. En primer lugar, porque estoy totalmente de acuerdo con esta afirmación, el uso de la mujer como objeto de atracción puramente físico, la cosificación de la mujer, es una constante en el lenguaje publicitario. Y en ese sentido, con toda probabilidad la polémica suscitada en torno a estas imágenes y el hecho de su retirada hayan propiciado que se active más de una conciencia en esa dirección. Para empezar, la de los propios anunciantes, que se han visto impulsados a retirar las imágenes y a pedir disculpas. Y en segundo término, la de los consumidores, que consciente o inconscientemente han sido llevados a fijar su atención en este aspecto crítico. ¿Servirá de algo?.
