¿Qué es la caricatura?. Cómo definición básica que pueda servir de punto de partida, podríamos referirnos como caricatura al “…retrato que exagera y distorsiona, con un objetivo humorístico, los rasgos físicos de una persona y ocasionalmente también su quehacer o la actividad que realiza…”, tal como propone el diccionario ABC http://www.definicionabc.com/general/caricatura.php. La definición aristotélica, por otra parte, nos dice que «…representa a los hombres peores de lo que son…» (Quirós Corradi, en Torres, 1982: presentación). Si bien, desde el punto de vista etimológico, el Dr. Carlos Abreu, Doctor en Ciencias de la Información por la Universidad de La Laguna, menciona en su blog personal que el vocablo “caricatura” deriva de «caricare» que significa cargar, acentuar o exagerar los rasgos (Gubern, 1987: 215) y que, según algunos autores, fue acuñado por Aníbal Caracci hacia finales del siglo XVI. Con el término, Caracci designaba a los trabajos que él y otros artistas hacían entonces en Bolonia (Torres, 1982: 18).
Es aquí, en Bolonia a mediados del siglo XVI, donde, para la mayor parte de los analistas, nace la caricatura de la mano de los Caracci, aunque mucho antes de surgir esta forma expresiva tal como la conocemos, algunos autores nos refieren representaciones gráficas caricaturescas en esculturas, dibujos y pinturas de la antigüedad.
Pero vamos a centrar nuestro análisis en una de las modalidades de caricatura más interesantes desde el punto de vista informativo y la más utilizada como herramienta propagandística: la caricatura política.
Coincidiendo con el avance que supuso el uso de la técnica litográfica (finales del siglo XVIII), que permitió la creación y divulgación generalizada de la prensa ilustrada, surgió en Francia la difusión masiva de ilustraciones alusivas a Napoleón III y Luis Felipe, de carácter satírico, que ponían en riesgo su credibilidad ante la opinión pública. Nacía así la caricatura política http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caricatura . Desde entonces, la caricatura política se ha ocupado de presentar una mirada deformada de la actualidad, cuestionando y denunciando abusos y excesos con especial irreverencia y sentido del humor.
En un sentido amplio, el término caricatura política conjuga determinados aspectos formales con cuestiones de contenido. En el plano formal, se enfatiza la representación gráfica exagerada, deformada, de personas o situaciones, acentuando ciertos rasgos físicos característicos, normalmente del rostro de los personajes caricaturizados. En lo que concierne al plano del contenido, la caricatura política se centra únicamente en aspectos concretos de los hechos de actualidad, a criterio del creativo, representando por tanto una visión particular de la realidad. Tal como sostiene Tillier, toda caricatura política opera a partir de la “exageración, deconstrucción y alteración” de la realidad abordada (TILLIER, 2005, p. 20). En consecuencia, la óptica del dibujante es selectiva y su visión suele ser comprometida puesto que lo que busca realmente son la crítica y la denuncia.
Como ejemplo representativo de lo anterior, véase la viñeta de Gallego&Rey inserta a continuación, http://www.apeuropeos.org/la-ape/felicitaciones-navidenas/felicitacion-navidena-2003-gallego-rey/, fiel exponente de las características formales antes aludidas:
Desde el punto de vista técnico, Ernst Gombrich describe en sus procedimientos de esquematización y experimentación las características básicas que debe conjugar toda representación caricaturesca, destacando entre ellas la simplicidad, la economía de los elementos y la semejanza respecto al objeto representado. Esto requiere del dibujante una especial capacidad para condensar la información, partiendo de unos simples trazos y con muy pocos elementos a disposición. Quizá por ello, una parte esencial del significado de la caricatura se sitúa, en mi opinión, en el ámbito del lector. Es el observador quién, desde la plataforma de sus conocimientos, su capacidad de observación y sus competencias, otorga a la imagen caricaturizada matices de significado que, en muchos casos, pueden coincidir apenas tangencialmente con la intención real del autor.
Dentro del estilo satírico que caracteriza en particular a la caricatura política, la ironía y el sarcasmo son los recursos más empleados. El uso preferente de uno u otro es, según algunos autores, un rasgo de diferenciación cultural. Así, Houdebine-Gravaud y Pozas (2006), pareja de autoras franco-española que realizaron un análisis cualitativo de los contenidos discursivos de determinadas series caricaturescas, sostienen que la ironía es una característica más propia de las crónicas francesas, mientras que el sarcasmo, más ácido y agresivo, suele estar más presente en los textos de origen español. Es un hecho, en todo caso, que las figuras retóricas forman parte intrínseca de la caricatura política como elementos esenciales del juego con lo implícito, de la asociación de ideas o de la repetición, por citar los recursos más frecuentes. Veamos algunos ejemplos:

Hay, por otro lado, momentos históricos más proclives al uso de la caricatura política y contextos socio-culturales más favorecedores de su divulgación. Ni todos los tiempos son iguales, ni todos los entornos igual de condicionantes. Los momentos de convulsión social, de crisis política o económica, son especialmente propensos al uso de la caricatura como instrumento de análisis crítico, exagerador de los aspectos negativos de los personajes públicos protagonistas del momento. Del mismo modo, las sociedades democratizadas son por definición más tolerantes y por tanto más favorecedoras de su uso y divulgación. En otro sentido, existen también personajes públicos más expuestos a la crítica a través de la caricaturización, bien por sus rasgos físicos diferenciales, bien por su estilo personal o bien por el grado de protagonismo negativo que son capaces de adquirir y que en consecuencia les somete al filtro de la crítica, una crítica con frecuencia cruel y despiadada que habitualmente se expresa a través de la exageración de los aspectos más llamativos de aquello que pretende ser criticado.
La caricatura y en particular su variante de crítica política, son por tanto un recurso práctico y accesible históricamente utilizado para ejercer el derecho de informar, que permite al autor adoptar una posición crítica acentuada que, por realizarse desde una perspectiva simbólico-humorística consigue reducir su impacto negativo, manteniendo todo su potencial informativo y permitiendo al observador complementar su significado con su propia aportación interpretativa.
