Acabo de leer por segunda vez esta inquietante novela de Unamuno y alguien me ha pedido un comentario sobre ella. Puesto que no me supone ningún esfuerzo, lo haré encantado, me gusta la novela y profeso una contenida admiración hacia su autor. Y si pongo límites a mi admiración por él, lo hago más por algunas de sus controvertidas actuaciones que por su ideología, que en gran medida podríamos llegar a compartir.
Sea como fuere, cuando hablamos de D. Miguel de Unamuno (1864-1936) nos estamos refiriendo al escritor, filósofo y poeta español considerado como el referente más destacado de la generación del 98. Hablamos probablemente de un genio, de toda una personalidad en el mundo de la intelectualidad. Muy por encima, en cualquier caso, de mi capacidad para juzgarle ni siquiera en el ámbito de sus actuaciones más polémicas.
Nació en Bilbao, si bien finalizados sus estudios medios se traslada a Madrid, donde estudia Filosofía y Letras, culminando a los diecinueve años con una tesis doctoral en la que polemiza con el incipiente nacionalismo vasco de Sabino Arana, coetáneo suyo. Sus estudios le propician la lectura de Marx, Hegel y Spencer, entre otros, lo que probablemente está en el origen de sus tendencias ideológicas socialistas, que no permanecen estables sino que van adquiriendo giros y matices a lo largo de toda su vida, llegando a apoyar al general Franco en su levantamiento militar, una de esas controvertidas actuaciones suyas a las que antes me refería. Fue rector de la Universidad de Salamanca en tres ocasiones diferentes y sufrió represalias políticas durante la dictadura de Primo de Ribera, situación que acabó abocándole al destierro entre 1924 y 1930.
Hasta aquí, el autor y su contexto. Ahora, la novela.
Niebla, considerada por muchos la obra de ficción más importante del escritor vasco, aborda una de las constantes en la filosofía existencial de Unamuno, su preocupación por su destino y en especial por la muerte. En esta nívola,(término acuñado por el propio Unamuno y utilizado por uno de sus personajes en la obra, Victor Goti, para definir su “nuevo género” de novelas de ficción frente a las novelas realistas imperantes en la época) ya el título, en sí mismo, nos proyecta el que finalmente acabará siendo el rasgo principal de la obra: la estrecha y confusa frontera que establece entre la realidad y la ficción.
La deriva existencial de Augusto Pérez, protagonista, enfrentado a dilemas simples que es incapaz de resolver, es el nudo gordiano de la trama. Sus dudas traslucen el espíritu del propio Unamuno, quién finalmente acaba introduciéndose como un personaje de la propia novela estableciendo una relación directa con el protagonista a través de la que se desgranan los temas esenciales que aborda.
El primero de ellos es que la realidad y la ficción indefectiblemente se superponen, resultando imposible distinguir entre la una y la otra. A través del enfrentamiento con sus personajes, reflejado en su cara a cara con Augusto cuando éste le aborda en su hogar de Salamanca, o incluso en el mismo Prólogo, dónde Victor Goti desmiente al autor revelando cómo murió Augusto, Unamuno expresa esa ambigüedad en la definición de lo que es real y lo que es imaginario. Quizá, mediante esta fórmula relacional, lo que pretenda poner en cuestión sea la identidad en sí misma, el yo frente al yo, lo que realmente le define frente a lo que le gustaría representar, eso que él mismo llama la dialéctica de la mismisidad-ipseidad. O tal vez, su pretensión sea simplemente expresar el afán de perpetuarse, el ansia de inmortalidad presente con profusión en la obra del autor. Sus temores existenciales, en definitiva.
Hace algunos años que leí por primera vez Niebla. Ahora, al releerla, he podido comprobar cómo revivía algunas de las viejas sensaciones que me transmitió en su día. Probablemente porque comparto con Unamuno ciertos aspectos de su visión existencialista, me he sentido identificado desde el principio con la confusa definición de los límites entre lo que es real y lo que pertenece al mundo de la imaginación. Cuestionarse los límites es una parte esencial de la existencia, transgredir los límites de la pura realidad situándola en plano de igualdad con la fantasía, es probablemente la forma más pura de dotarla de sentido pleno. Quizá la realidad sea solo eso, la mejor expresión de la imaginación de quién la observa, y, tal vez el uso de la imaginación sea la única alternativa que nos permite dar sentido a la realidad, asumirla y entenderla. En definitiva, vivir. Esto es, en esencia, lo que me ha vuelto a sugerir Niebla.
